Lawrence P. Sweeney, 81, of Manchester died May 16, 2009 at Hanover Hill Health Care Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 27, 1927 to Myles and Florence (Fredette) Sweeney, he grew up in Little Neck, Queens, NY where he lived until enlisting in the Navy to serve his country during WWII. Following the war, he graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Business Administration and worked as a computer system specialist for New York Life Insurance Company for 35 years. While at Syracuse he played in the marching band.

He married Geraldine "Gerri" Fitzgerald of Douglaston, NY in 1953 and raised their 7 children together in West Islip, NY. After moving to Pennsylvania in 1979, he served his church and community as a member of the Holy Name Society and as secretary for the Father DeNisco Council of the Knights of Columbus in Bangor, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Sweeney was awarded the title of Knight of the Year in recognition for his service to the community and his fellow Knights.

IN HIS LIFE: Larry was a lover of jazz music. He was beloved for his gentle manner, his generous and tolerant spirit, and his kind and loving nature. He will be sorely missed by his children, grandchildren and all who had the honor of his friendship.

The family includes his wife of 56 years, Geraldine (Fitzgerald) Sweeney, of Manchester; seven children, Kevin Sweeney of Oakdale, NY, Glenn Sweeney and his wife, Heather, of Amherst, Nancy Huseman and her husband, John, of Amherst, Daniel Sweeney and his fiance, Tanya Quinn, of Annandale, NJ, Patrick Sweeney and his wife, Heather, of Portland, OR, Kathe Sweeney and her husband, Neil Edde, of San Francisco, CA,; and John Sweeney of East Stroudsburg. PA; 10 grandchildren: Cale and Ryan Sweeney of Amherst, Danielle, Tiffany, Taylor, and Tanner Huseman of Amherst, Kelley and Christopher Sweeney of Bayshore, NY, and Cole and Liam Sweeney of Portland, OR, and cousins

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at St. Catherine Church, corner of Webster and Hemlock streets, Manchester. Burial of cremated remains was in Flushing, NY at the convenience of the family.
