Dr. Leonard C. Bailey, resident of Bedford, NH since 1999, died August 15, 2004 at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, due to complications of lung cancer.
Dr. Bailey was born in 1936 in Jersey City, NJ, the son of Charles J. and Florence C. (Leonard) Bailey. He attended Regis High School in New York City, and graduated from Fordham College in 1957. After serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1958-60, he earned a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science from Rutgers University in 1969. He worked at Ortho Pharmaceuticals until 1973. He then joined the faculty at Rutgers College of Pharmacy, where he was admired as an outstanding teacher and mentor; he retired in 1999 as Professor Emeritus of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He also served on several committees for the United States Pharmacopeia, most recently co-chairing the advisory committee on medication storage and distribution.
Prior to his retirement, he lived with his family in Somerville and Warren, NJ. His community service included terms on Somerville's Environmental Commission and on Bedford's water usage advisory board.
His favorite pursuits at home included gardening, sailing, reading, and golf. In the past two years, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandson Declan.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dr. Carole A. (Sulborski) Bailey of Bedford; a son Dr. L. Charles Bailey Jr of Drexel Hill, PA, and his wife Joy; daughter Karen A. Bailey of Andover, MA, her husband Michael Woodring and their son Declan; his brother Dr. James P. Bailey of Mountain Lakes, NJ, and his wife Barbara and daughters Danielle and Shannon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Road, Bedford, on August 19, 2004. Memorial donations may be made to Regis High School, 55 E. 84th Street, New York, NY 10028 (Attn: Development Office; please indicate if you would like the family to be informed of your gift).
