Sister Lucille J. Cantin, CSC, 65, of 357 Island Pond Road, Manchester, died May 15, 2004, at Holy Cross Health Center, after a long illness. Born in Manchester on March 21, 1939, she was the daughter of Donat O. and Julienne (Dionne) Cantin.
Sister Lucille entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Holy Cross August 16, 1956 in Manchester, NH, and pronounced her final vows in St. Laurent, Montreal, on August 15, 1963.
Sister Lucille obtained a BA from Notre Dame College in 1969, a M.Ed. in Elementary and Middle School Education from the University of New Hampshire in 1975, and a Ph.D. in Education from Boston College in 1989.
From 1958 to 1976 Sr. Lucille served as an elementary teacher at St. Louis School in Nashua; St. George School in Manchester; St. Mary's School in Newmarket; St. Leo's School in Gonic; St. Augustin School and East Catholic Regional School, St. Catherine building, both in Manchester.
She served as principal of Manchester East Catholic, St. Anthony building, from 1976 to 1978.
From 1979 until it's closing in 2002, she taught at Notre Dame College as a professor ofsocial science, instructor of education, director of the certificate program, assistant professor of education and as director of M.Ed. in elementary/secondary teaching.From 2002 to 2003 she was a professor of education at Southern NH University.
Among her many achievements, Sister Lucille was listed in the National Jesuit Honor Society Alpha Sigma Nu, and Who's Who?, as well as Teacher of the Year at Notre Dame College.
In addition to an active teaching ministry, Sister Lucille also served in a leadership position as Regional Representative of the Sisters of Holy Cross in the U.S. Region from 1991 to 1998.
Sister Lucille used her singing talent as cantor at St. Anne's Parish, Manchester, NH from 1996 to 2003.
Family members include her stepmother, Laurette Cantin of Manchester; a sister, Lorraine Sheehan of Edgewater, MD, an aunt, Aurise Trepanier of Manchester ; three nephews, one niece, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday May 19, 2004 at St. Augustin Church, Manchester. Burial followed in St. Augustin Cemetery.
