Although consoled by the fact that she is with dad now, it is with great sadness that the family of Lucille (Mondou) Megan of Manchester, NH, formerly of Acton, MA, announce her peaceful passing on April 18, 2026, at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 90.
Predeceased by her dedicated husband of 64 years, Paul, she will be fondly remembered by her six sons: Michael of Peterborough, NH; Peter (Caroline) of Hooksett, NH; Paul, Jr. of Deering, NH; Christopher (AnneMarie) of Falmouth, MA; John (Leah) of Plymouth, MA; and Daniel (Kathleen) of Dedham, MA. Proud grandmother of 17 grandchildren: Michael (Sarah), Hannah, KB, Catherine (Kendrick) Whittle, Kyle (Megan) McGann, Brendan (Kaylin), Julianna, Sean, Ciara (Andrew) DeVizio, Connor (Autumn), Brenna (Jay) Hart, Erin (Dan) Wilson, Sarah, Emily (Sebastian) Kerly, Casey, Paul Francis, and Mary Katherine; and 12 great-grandchildren: Jamison and Adeline Whittle; Maggie McGann; Riley Megan; Jack, Claire, and Owen DeVizio; Avery and Walker Hart; Emerson Megan; and Bennett and Lily Wilson.
Lucille was predeceased by her parents, Ovila and Beatrice Mondou, her step-mother, Marie; brother, Dr. Robert Mondou Sr.; sister, Therese Mondou; brothers-in-law, John and Francis Megan Jr.; and sisters-in-law, Alva Megan and Maureen Mondou. She is survived by her loving sister-in-law Patricia Megan, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Having grown up on the west side of Manchester, Lucille graduated first in her class from the Villa Augustina School in nearby Goffstown where she was an editor for the school newspaper and yearbook, and secretary of the National Honor Society.
Following high-school graduation, Lucille completed preliminary nursing studies at Notre Dame de Lourdes Hospital School of Nursing in Manchester before matriculating to St. Anselm College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. While at “St. A’s,” she met the love of her life, Paul. After falling in love and marrying, they moved to Belmont, MA for a period before settling in Acton, MA where they lived for 47 years, raising six sons with compassionate understanding and an abundance of patience and support.
Although Lucille’s professional calling was nursing, her life mission was to be the family’s unstinting homemaker, tending to the everyday needs and challenges, and the to-be-expected curve-balls, that come with raising six sons with tremendous commitment, courage, and love. In time, Lucille returned to work, first in the classroom as an English and grammar teacher, helping soldiers at the US Army’s nearby Fort Devens prepare for their GED (General Educational Development) exam, and later as a staff nurse at the practice of Dr. Mary Donald in Acton.
In the 1970’s, while her sons were active in Scouts, she served as camp nurse at Scouting America’s Camp Wanocksett in Dublin, NH where, through her and Paul’s example, all six sons, and in time several grandchildren, went on to become staff members at Camp Wanocksett or other area Scout camps. Lucille’s dedication to Scouts was a year-round pledge as evidenced by her being awarded Scouting America’s Silver Beaver Award in 2006 for her decades of service as the district advancement committee chairperson for Nashua Valley Council.
Along the way, Lucille also dedicated herself to supporting St. Anselm College’s Office of Alumni Relations, eventually receiving (along with Paul) the Joseph P. Collins ’34 Meritorious Service Award, which is presented annually to an alumnus/a who has given extraordinary service to the college through sustained activity that promotes the advancement and standing of the alumni association and the college.
Lucille’s super-power was always her unshakable faith, which was an example to all. “If you have your faith, you will have the strength to face any difficulty life throws at you,” she was fond of reminding her sons in their formative years. The depth of her faith was reflected in her energetic support of the family parish, St. Elizabeth’s of Hungary Catholic Church in Acton where she taught religious education, was a Eucharistic Minister, and was active in the Marriage Encounter and Cursillo ministries. At the Acton Community Supper and Food Pantry, she helped provide meals for those experiencing food insecurity.
Lucille’s dedication to others extended beyond her family, faith, and alma mater. Upon learning of her passing, a longtime family friend who grew up with the Megan’s next door in Acton remarked, “She was like my other mom. I always felt like a Megan. She and your dad treated me that way. We were raised the right way,
brothers!”.
Although a “force of nature” in her own right (as a niece remarked upon learning of her passing), Lucille lived a life of humility with deep consideration of others, particularly the less fortunate, and an uncompromising respect for life, especially the unborn. She unquestionably increased grace in this world, and she will be deeply missed by many.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the Elliot Visiting Nurse Association’s hospice care team, and Amada Senior Care of Bedford, NH, for their compassionate care of mom in her final days. A special note of thanks must also be extended to Sarah Megan whose untiring care made mom’s final weeks and days that much more comfortable.
Friends and relatives are invited to a funeral mass, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday, June 5 th , 2026, at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 103 Walker St., Manchester, NH. As per Lucille’s wish, no visiting hours are planned in advance of the funeral mass, and a private rite of committal will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations in Lucille’s name suggested to Special Olympics New Hampshire (https://www.sonh.org/ways-to-give/donate/) and the Acton Community Supper and Food Pantry (https://www.actonfoodpantry.org).
