Mary (Saide) Stephen, of Manchester, passed away on April 11, 2017 at Hanover Hill Health Care Center shortly after her 97th birthday surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Manchester on April 7, 1920 to Saheed and Wadea (Jacob) George. She was a lifelong resident of Manchester and was educated in the local school system.
Mary had worked at Myrna Shoe Company, the Youth Development Center of NH and owned and operated her own restaurant in Manchester She also prepared Middle East cuisine and pastries, including the "best" baklava at the Vault Restaurant in Manchester where she would start her day at 3 a.m.
Mary loved spending time with her family and friends, enjoyed cooking and gardening and attending many of her grandchildren's school and sports activities. Whether it was a hockey game, dance recital, skating event, school play or graduation, Mary would always be there rooting, cheering and smiling.
She was an original founder and parishioner of Our Lady of the Cedars Church in Manchester where she attended Mass regularly and spent many years preparing food for fundraisers, outings and events. She also attended Masses at the Precious Blood Monastery and loved spending summers with her family at Hampton Beach.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hanover Hill Health Center and the Compassionate Care Hospice for their loving and wonderful care they gave to Mary.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph E. Stephen in 1978 and four siblings, Charles George, John George, George Saide and Freda George.
The family includes five children, Bobby Stephen and his wife, Shirley and Mary Ann Longchamps and her husband, Bob, all of Manchester, Thomas Stephen and his wife, Monica and Louis Stephen, all of Arizona and Wadea Payne and her husband, Steve, of Manchester; 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, including three sets of twins; and a sister, Louise DeRita of Maryland.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Our Lady of the Cedars Church, corner of Calef Road and Mitchell Street, Manchester. Committal prayers followed at St. Joseph Cemetery, 448 Donald St., Bedford.
