Michael Bayko

November 4, 1929 — January 7, 2018

Michael Bayko, 88, of Merrimack passed away on January 7, 2018 after a short illness surrounded by family. He was born on November 4, 1929 in Manchester, the son of Peter and Rose (Tomicky) Bayko. He attended Manchester grammar schools and was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1948. He graduated from St. Anselm College class of 1954 with a BA in History. Mike was a veteran of the US Army, having served his country during the Korean War.

Mike retired in 1995 as Deputy Clerk of NH Superior Court. He always said he enjoyed every day of that second, successful career. Until 1981, he was the co-owner and operator of the Palace Fruit Store with his former wife Kathleen Bayko, located on the corner of Hanover and Chestnut streets in downtown Manchester. At that time, he was also the proprietor of the city block anchored by the Palace Fruit store, which contained several businesses on the first floor, and the early locations of Hesser Business College and NH College on the second floor.

For over 35 years Mike was actively involved as a member of the New England Bee Keepers Association. He served in several leadership roles in NH Clubs and MA Clubs and was awarded Bee Keeper of the Year multiple times. For many years including this past fall season, he served as a Judge for Honey in Apiary exhibits in Fairs and Festivals throughout NH and MA. He was a proud Golden Anselmian. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed gardening and baking. He was a devoted New England Patriots fan and an armchair football strategist, play-maker and coach. He was fiercely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to talk about their news. He took great pleasure in his weekly visits with his great-grandchildren. He was a first-generation American, lived "the American Dream", and was proud of his Ukrainian heritage.

Family includes one daughter, Diane Corriveau and husband Pierre of Portsmouth, RI; one son, David Bayko of Manchester; three grandchildren, Kathleen Corriveau and her husband James Bird, Morgan and Cameron Bayko; three great-grandchildren Elena, Caroline and Chandler Bird; and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents; four brothers, Andrew, Stephen, Nicholas, and John Bayko; and one sister, Ann Manning.
