Napoleon J. Gamache, 91, of Manchester, died at his residence, October 31, 2004, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Manchester, April 15, 1913, he was the son of Oliva and Anna (Leblanc) Gamache. He was a lifelong resident of this city. He served in the US Army during World War II.
Mr. Gamache worked as a firefighter and was a member of the Manchester Fire Department from 1942 to 1970. He later worked as a custodian for the Manchester School Department. He also worked in the roofing business with three of his sons until he was 77.
He was a 50 year member of the Alpine Club where he participated in snow racing. He was a past president of the American Snow Shoers Unionand in 1960, set a world record for snow shoeing from Manchester to Montreal in eleven days. He was a musician and played with the Alpine Club Band and the Muchachos Marching Band. He was and avid bingo player and loved to shoot pool.
He was married to Rose (Gelinas) Gamache, who died in 1999.
Family members include four sons; Normand Gamache, Robert,Gamache, both of Manchester, Raymond Gamache of, FL, and Richard Gamache of Goffstown; 4 daughters, Lucille Ducharme, Therese Vachon, both of Manchester, Pauline April, of FL, Diane Lord, of Goffstown; 21 grandchildren, and 38 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday November 4, 2004 at Sacred Heart Church, So Main St. Manchester. Burial followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Goffstown Rd. Manchester.
In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may be made to the Old Soldiers Home in Tilton NH or the Manchester Firefighters Relief Association Scholarship Fund, 100 Merrimack St. Manchester NH 03101, or VNA hospice 1850 Elm St. Manchester NH. 03104.
