He was born in Boston, MA on May 23, 1917 to Raphael and Rose (Cardinale) Calandrella. He graduated from Bentley Business School and lived for many years in Manchester and in Massachusetts at Arlington and Hudson.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.
Nicholas worked in Boston for the State of Massachusetts Division of Employment Security as a program analyst and later as a director. Most recently he had been a communicant of St. Catherine Church in Manchester.
He was married to Rita L. (Boisvert) Calandrella who died in 2007.
The family includes his children, Leonard Calandrella and his wife, Christine McDonough, of Norwich, VT, Marc Calandrella and his wife, Bernice Allitto, of Sudbury, MA, Nancy Calandrella and her husband, Michael Thanos, of Hudson, MA, Linda Calandrella of Dracut, MA and Paul Calandrella and his wife, Andrea, of Lebanon, NH; a niece, Rita Piotrowski and her husband, Robert, of Amherst, NH; 15 grandchildren, Julie, Emily, Alex, Adrienne, Michelle, David, Lindsay, Patrick, Steven, Nicholas, Theresa, Francis, Dominic, Amanda and Kirsten; two great grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Ricciuti of Delaware; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, December 5, 2014 at St. Joseph Cathedral Chapel, Manchester. Committal prayers followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 474 Goffstown Rd., Manchester.
