Philip L. McGarrigle

Philip L. McGarrigle, 96, of Manchester, died January 9, 2015 at the Courville at Manchester after a period of declining health.

He was born in Manchester on April 9, 1918 to John and Ellen (McSweeney) McGarrigle. He graduated from St. Joseph Cathedral High School in 1937 and from St. Anselm College in 1941. He lived in Manchester for most of his life.

Athletics were an important part of his early life when he played baseball, football, basketball and ran track in high school.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific on the islands of Guadalcanal and Bouganville.. He remained in the Marines on the west coast then returned to Manchester where he retired as a Major. He later served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Philip worked for the State of New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services for many years. He also enjoyed skiing in New Hampshire and California.

He was married to Phyllis L. (Miniutti) McGarrigle, who died in 1985. He was also predeceased by six siblings.

The family includes two sons, Philip L. McGarrigle Jr. and his wife, Leah, of Palo Alto, CA and Thomas J. McGarrigle and his wife Brenan, of Norwell, MA; five grandchildren, Clare, Anna, Martin, Cole and Holly.; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at St. Catherine Church, corner of Webster and Hemlock streets, Manchester. Committal prayers followed in the Shaw Chapel at St. Joseph Cemetery, 448 Donald St., Bedford.
