Philip Smagula

Philip Smagula, 84, of Manchester, died January 3, 2008, at Hanover Hill Healthcare Center after a period of declining health.

He was born in Manchester, August 26, 1923, and was the son of Thomas and Hessie Smagula. He was a lifelong resident of this city.

Mr. Smagula served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.

For over 35 years Mr Smagula worked as a truck driver, first for Genest Bakery, and later for Nissen Bakery. In his later years he enjoyed having breakfast with his loyal friends at MacDonalds. He also enjoyed farming and growing vegetables in his garden as well as doing crossword puzzles. Phil will be remembered for having the greatest collection of hubcaps in the area.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Doris (Kerouac) Smagula, who died December 4, 2007. In addition he was predeceased by two daughters, Carol Ann Smagula, in 1967, and Linda Lee Smagula, in 1980.

Family members include a daughter, Donna McDowell, of Allenstown, 2 sons Ron Smagula, of Gilford, and Gary Smagula, of Bedford; 6 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday January 7, 2008 at St. Anthony Church, 172 Belmont St., Manchester. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, at the convenience of the family.
