Rachael Louise Plante, 78, died April 22, 2004 at Greenbriar Terrace Healthcare Center in Nashua, after a long illness. She was born in Goffstown on June 10, 1925, the seventh and youngest child of Elphege and Dorothy (Campbell) Plante. She lived in Goffstown most of her life.
Ms. Plante graduated from Goffstown High School in 1943, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Mary Washington College, University of Virginia, in 1947. She was an avid equestrian and sports-woman.
Ms. Plante was a physical education teacher in the Manchester school system for over 30 years, until her retirement in 1982.
Ms. Plante was also an accomplished golfer and won many amateur championships in New Hampshire in the 1960s and 1970s. She was named "New Hampshire Athlete of the Year" by the Manchester Union Leader in 1963.
She is survived by five nephews: Martin Plante and Philip Plante, both of Maryland, David Plante of Colorado, Marc Boulay of Manchester, and Paul Boulay of Maine; five nieces, Frances Cady, Susan Butler and Nancy Wiley of Maryland, Carolyn Scarpaci of Rhode Island, Leola Edwards of Maine, and several great nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Tuesday April 27, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the N.H. Association for the Blind, 25 Walker St., Concord, NH 03301, and the Joslin Diabetic Research Center, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
