Richard P. "Dick" Dowd

Richard (Dick) Patrick Dowd, a lifelong resident of Manchester, passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2021, surrounded by his loving family, after a period of declining health.
Son of John Dowd and Lea Boisvert Dowd, he attended local schools and Manchester Central High School. A veteran of the Korean conflict, he was proud to have been a member of the Marine Corps and was discharged as a Sergeant.
After graduating from Keene State College, Dick taught social studies at both the Junior High and Middle Schools in Goffstown NH for 35 years.
In retirement, he was a ballot inspector at Ward 2 for several years, a job that he loved. Participating in lively political discussions was something he truly enjoyed.
Dick was a member of the Derryfield Country Club until his health forced him to give up the game, although he did keep a putter in the living room for occasional practice.
He is survived by his devoted wife Phyllis and his four children - Susan McHugh (Thomas) of Manchester, Heather Westra (John) of Lincoln NE, Matthew Dowd (Michelle) of Danville NH and Gregory Dowd (Joan) of Shrewsbury MA. Grandchildren, Lauren, Kerry, Hannah, Ben, Brendan, Christopher, Sam and Andrew. He especially loved time spent with his four great grandchildren, Quinn, William, Sutton and Sadie.
Dick is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Francis Dowd, Lillian Gaumont, Dorothy Gaumont and Charlotte Howe and infant grandson Connor Dowd.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Richard Tedesco and the medical staff at the VNA of Manchester - Imelda, Jen, Kathy and Kelly who helped make his life and Phyllis' much easier. Thanks also to Pauline of Easter Seals who spent many hours getting Dick involved playing games on her Kindle.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 20th, 2021, at noon at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Webster St in Manchester. Due to COVID-19 precautions, please abide by the social distancing guidelines and wear a mask.
Private burial will be Monday March 22nd at NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dick's memory to the Visiting Nurse Association of Manchester, 1070 Holt Ave. Suite 1400, Manchester NH 03109.
