Robert C. “Bob” Carr, 99, of Manchester, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026. Robert was born on September 28, 1926 in Medford, Massachusetts to the late Ralph and Edna (Larson) Carr.
Bob grew up in Belmont and graduated from Belmont High School in 1943. At 17, lying about his age, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific theater, rising to the rank of Sergeant. His service took him to Hawaii, Guadalcanal, Ulithi Atoll and Guam.
Bob attended Boston University and graduated from the School of Management in 1950. The following year, he married Edith “Edy” Tobin, and together they raised four children while living in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Bob built a long and respected career in the investment industry. After working with several brokerage firms in Boston, he opened a Manchester, NH branch office in 1965. He later founded Robert C. Carr & Co., which grew to include offices in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts. He served as President and Director of the firm. Bob was also a member of the Boston Stock Exchange and served on its Board of Governors.
His children remember how fun loving and adventurous he was. He made sure the entire family could ski at a high level so they could all enjoy family winter getaways in the NH mountains. Together they made a memorable trek on a Mother’s Day to ski Tuckerman’s Ravine on Mount Washington. He encouraged all his kids to get scuba certified and spent time diving in the Caribbean in search of Spanish ship wrecks with the California relatives. The dog, Honey, was bred and delivered at home, 11 puppies, a thrill for his kids. Proceeds were used to buy a little sailboat for Lake Wentworth and Dad-led sailing lessons. There was also waterskiing, challenging everyone to slalom.
Bob was a regular at the Oakley Country Club in Belmont with his parents where he learned to be a scratch golfer at an early age. He continued to enjoy the sport well into his 70’s. He had his mother’s gift for painting. Canvas, frames and oil paints cluttered his studio. He took classes and had opportunities to exhibit his work in some New England galleries.
Deeply committed to civic life, Bob gave generously of his time and leadership. In Manchester, he was President and Director of the Webster House for many years. He and Edy were passionate about the service this home provided to displaced children. He served as a trustee of the Palace Theater Trust. He was a director of the Visiting Nurses Association, president and director of the Kiwanis Club, president and director of the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences and a member of the advisory board of the Currier Gallery of Art. Bob and his wife Edy were regulars at Manchester’s family tennis and swimming club, Sudden Pitch. And typical of Bob, he did his part as President of the club for a period of time there as well.
After retiring in 1991, Bob and Edy enjoyed 15 years in Naples, Florida, followed by several years in Beaufort, South Carolina. From there, they migrated northward and after 3 years in Chatham Massachusetts, they returned to Manchester in 2008.
His children and grandchildren remember him as a devoted father, husband and friend. He was creative, artistic, fun-loving, adventurous, and generous. He was a Dad that could be counted on to stand by his
children and was always there when needed.
Bob is survived by three of his children: Cathy Hedlund of Grand Junction, Colorado, Susan Templeton of Naples, Florida, and Robert Carr Jr. of Manchester; along with eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife: Edy in 2020; his daughter: Rhonda Evans in 2023; and his granddaughter: Nadia Templeton in 2024.
Burial will be private.
