Robert Allen Layton, 64, of Manchester died September 25, 2011 at Catholic Medical Center.

He was born on June 4, 1947 in Fond du Lac Wisconsin, and was the son of Virgil R. Layton and Marjorie June (Steger). He was predeceased by his father and by his step father Godfrey Vogel.

He joined the US Navy in September 1964, and served on the USS Dupot (DD 941) Navy Destroyer. He fought for his country 1967-1968 in Vietnam on both land and sea. He received a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a Navy Meritorious Unit Accommodation with Combat in Vietnam.

Robert worked for BAE Systems for 29 years and was a Licensed Master Plumber, Pipe Fitter, and a Certified Welder. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 483 from Nashua and a member of the American Legion. He was an avid hunter and lifetime member of the N.R.A.

He enjoyed hunting the great outdoors, his mountain home, and spending time with his family. For the man who taught us that nothing in life is free, his love and support for his family was.

Family members include his beloved wife of 43 years Rita (Demers) Layton of Manchester; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott Robert Layton of Goffstown, NH Brian Allen Layton and his wife Tina Carolyn Layton of Deerfield, NH; four grandchildren, Renee, Kayla, Rebecca and Rosemary June Layton, his mother, Marjorie (Steger) (Layton) Vogel; two brothers, Arthur Layton of WI and Fred Vogel of WI; a sister, Sharron Schrock of WI; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial gathering took place on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm Street, Manchester.
