He was born in Manchester on August 20, 1927, the son of Moise and Ellen (Nadeau) Martel. He was educated in the local school system and attended Manchester Central High.
Robert served in the US Army during World War II and the Korean War. Prior to his retirement in 1989, he had been employed by Harvey and Carbo Construction for many years. He was a member of Local 1996 Carpenters Union, American Legion Henry J. Sweeney Post #2, the VFW # 8214, Sacred Heart Troop 135-Steering Committee and CYO Organization.
He was a New England sports advocate, mostly of the New England Patriots & Boston Red Sox. He was always "puttering around" and his hands were never idle.
Robert was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Candy (Gauthier) Martel in 2001.
Family members include a daughter, Denise C. Martel-Bastien and her husband Gerry of Manchester; a son, Robert W. Martel and wife Lisa of Candia; a grandson, Jaymin R. Martel of Candia. He is predeceased by two sons, Ronald R. and Richard G. Martel and was the youngest surviving member of his siblings.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Sacred Heart Church, 265 S. Main St., Manchester, followed by committal prayers in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2 Commerce Drive, Suite 110, Bedford, NH 03110.
