Roland F. Hayes Jr., of Shelburne, NH, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on December 22, 2018. The eldest of 9 children, born to Roland F. Hayes Sr. and Margaret (Wilson) Hayes. Roland, commonly known as Jr., was born and raised in Shelburne.
Roland was an expert craftsman who turned his grandmother's camp into a home for his wife and daughters, to which he returned to in his retirement. In his youth, Roland worked area farms and was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps before answering his call to serve in the Army Air Corps in South Pacific during WWII. Upon his return, he worked for the railroad in Gorham and Lavigne Trucking Company in Berlin. He was the owner and operator of Roland's Tent and Trailer Camping. Roland moved his family to Manchester and worked for AuClair Trucking, where he retired as a diesel mechanic. Roma was the love of his life for 71 years and he held her hand until the very end.
Roland lived a long, happy life and nothing was more important to him than his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, uncle, and brother. He was a simple man who enjoyed life and would be described as a gentle, loving, humble, and sincere man.
Roland is survived by his beloved wife, Roma M. (Bennett) Hayes; two daughters, Belinda A. Gaudette and Donna L. Cote; grandchildren, Thomas Cote, Stacie Brown, and Tara McArthur; brothers, Warren "Tommy" Hayes, Charles Hayes; sister, Shirley (Hayes) Lemay; 7 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; many nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: There will be a memorial service at the family's discretion, at a later date.
