Ruth Leung Tung, 94, of Manchester died peacefully on September 28, 2017 at Catholic Medical Center.
She was born in Macao on July 15, 1923, one of five children of Louis P. and Annie (Ho) Leung. Her father, a graduate of Boston University Medical School, was Director of Pickford Memorial Hospital in Kinhua, China.
Mrs. Tung graduated from Hsiang-Ya Medical College (Yale-in-China Medical School) in Changsha, China. Mrs. Tung immigrated to the United States in 1949 and received her specialty training in the pediatric residency program at University of Bridgeport Hospital. She married Hsi-Lin Tung, MD in 1951 and moved to Manchester with her husband in 1956. Rather than continuing her medical practice, she devoted herself to raising her five children. She often joked that she maintained her own pediatric ward at home dealing with the typical colds, flus and stomachaches children often had.
She was an avid gardener and a member of the Manchester Garden Club. She was a devout member of the First Congregational Church in Manchester, having first joined in 1957, and was sustained by her faith and the church which became her second family.
She is survived by her five children: Arthur and wife Shirley, Paul and wife Lea, Grace and husband Stephen, James and wife Karen, and David and wife Heather; six beloved grandchildren whom she adored: Catherine, Bethany and husband Jamie, Elizabeth and husband David, Andrew, Robert and Sydni; many beloved nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law Yvonne Feng (Palos Verdes, CA), Wing-Yin Leong (Portland, OR), and Portia Tung (Toronto, Canada) and brother-in-law Kenneth Tung (Charlottesville, VA).
Her husband predeceased her (2014) as did her four siblings.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the First Congregational Church in Manchester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First Congregational Church, 508 Union Street, Manchester, NH 03104.
