He was born in Manchester on January 19, 1925 to Zisis and Elizabeth (Noucas) Makris. He was a lifelong resident of Manchester.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in Burma, China and India. He also served in the Army National Guard for 30 years and retired as Chief Warrant Officer W4.
Mr. Makris worked for Auclair Transportation, Granite State Packing and Teamsters Local 633.
He was active with Boy Scouts Troop 110 for 25 years. He was a member of the Diocesan Council at St. Jean the Baptist Church, now Parish of the Transfiguration, where he was chairman of the Building Committee and served as a lector for 32 years.
He was a member of American Legion Sweeney Post and served as co-chairman for the United Fund in 1960 and 1961. He was later appointed to the Public Employees Labor Relations Board by Gov. Jeanne Shaheen. He also was a commissioner with the Manchester Transit Authority
He was an avid golfer at Derryfield Country Club and Manchester Country Club.
The family includes his wife of 65 years, Claire G. (Lesmerises) Makris of Manchester; five children, Dan Makris of Dallas, TX, James Makris and his wife, Lynn, and Leslie Makris all of Manchester, Elizabeth Martini and her husband, Mark, of Warrenton, VA and Carolyn Colpitts and her husband, Matthew, of Franconia; 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Parish of the Transfiguration, Kelley Street, Manchester. The burial is private and will be held at the convenience of the family at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
