Sr. Lucille Medeiros, CSC, (Sr. Mary Paul of Damascus), was born on November 16, 1926, and passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024 at Holy Cross Health Center in Manchester, NH, eleven days prior to celebrating her 98th birthday.
Sr. Lucille Medeiros was born in New Bedford, MA. She is predeceased by her parents, Paul Medeiros and Florida Manderville Medeiros. She is survived by her younger brother, Rev. Paul Medeiros, OMI, who spent many years as a missionary in Brazil. Sr. Lucille also leaves behind her companions, the Sisters of Holy Cross in the U. S. Region.
In 1945, Sr. Lucille entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Holy Cross. She pronounced her final vows in 1952. In preparation for a long teaching career, Sr. Lucille received a BA degree from Notre Dame College in Manchester, NH, and an MA in English and Religious Education from Boston College.
Sr. Lucille spent thirty-one years in the classroom, classrooms that spanned the entire spectrum from K-12. She taught in Nashua, Newmarket, Manchester, NH; and in Springfield and New Bedford, MA. In 1969 she returned to her Alma Mater, St. Anthony High School in New Bedford, MA, where she assumed the responsibility of Head of the English Department. Sister Lucille’s commitment to education continued for fourteen years as Director of Religious Education in parishes in Bellingham, MA; and in Durham, Suncook, and Manchester, NH.
Even in her retirement, Sr. Lucille gladly responded to requests for services where she could be of assistance to community members. For four years she volunteered her time at the Administrative Offices of the Sisters of Holy Cross in Manchester, NH, assuming the responsibility of secretary. At other times she was on call for daytime transportation for the residents at Holy Cross Health Center as well as those at St. George Manor.
After a long life consecrated to God and many successful undertakings in service to God’s people, Lucille is now in the company of her family and friends who have welcomed her into her eternal rest.
SERVICES: The celebration of her life will take place at St. George Manor, 357 Island Pond Road, Manchester, NH, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM with prayer at 3:00 PM. The funeral Mass will be held in the St. George Manor chapel on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of Holy Cross, and mailed to 367 Island Pond Road, Manchester, NH 03109.
