Sr. Mary Jane Benoit, PM (Sr. Saint Elphege), 95, of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Manchester, died February 10, 2017 at her residence.
She was born in Richelieu, Quebec, Canada on October 10, 1921 to Gilbert and Odina (Chauvin) Benoit.
She earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in education, both from Rivier College in Nashua and her PhD from Boston College.
Sr. Benoit taught at the elementary school level in Rhode Island for nine years. She was then assigned to Rivier College for 55 years. At Rivier, she was a professor in the education department at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 1971 she became Academic Dean of Faculty and Director of Elementary Education at the graduate level.
She received many awards and commendations including the Madeleine of Jesus Award in 1988 and the Catholic Education for Higher Education Award in 1994. The Benoit Center at Rivier University is also named in her honor. She retired to St. Joseph Residence in Manchester in 2008.
The family includes a sister, Rita Pelczarski and nieces and nephews.
Sr. Benoit was predeceased by her parents, a sister and seven half sisters and brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, February 17, 2017 in the Resurrection Chapel of St. Marie Residence, 495 Mammoth Rd., Manchester. Burial will be in Presentation of Mary Cemetery in Hudson.
