He was born in Manchester August 26, 1922 the son of Joaquin and Doria (Boudreau) Gomes. He lived in Hooksett for many years before returning to Manchester several years ago.
Walter served in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of the 10th Mountain Division which was the most decorated unit in the Mediterranean theatre.
He retired in 1985 from the Veterans Administration Medical Center where he worked as a lab technician. During his retirement he worked for New England Brace Co. for 14 years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 37 in Hooksett for 36 years. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was a communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Hooksett.
Walter was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Harnois) Gomes, in 2001. In addition he was predeceased by his daughter in-law, Diane (Chouinard) Gomes, four siblings, Claire Charette, Irene Foster, Gerald Gomes and Maurice "Buddy" Gomes.
Family members include a son, Ronald W. Gomes of Manchester; a granddaughter, Sonya Ann Avery of Manchester; two great granddaughters, Elizabeth and Chloe Avery; two sisters, Anita Vincent of Orlando, FL and Jeannette Dubois of Deltona, FL; many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Holy Rosary Church in Hooksett. Burial followed in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
