William E. “Bill” Smith, 93, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Villa Crest Nursing Home in Manchester. He was born on March 27, 1933 in Auburn, NH to the late Edwin Smith and Helen (Ficek) Campbell.
Bill attended severance school first grade in Auburn, attended Auburn Village School from second grade until eighth grade and then graduated from Central High School in Manchester. He met and married a student nurse named Shirley Alice Barton in 1952. In April of 1953, he became a U.S. Army soldier. After basic training at Fort Dix in NJ, he was shipped to Salzburg Austria. While there, he was sent to Non-commissioned Officers Academy in Linz, Austria. He was honorably discharged in March 1955 as an E-5 Sergeant.
Upon being a civilian, Bill found employment in the trucking industry. He settled for union work as the family was growing. He also took a very interesting look at the union. So much so that he ran for office four times. The last office he held was Vice President of Teamsters Local 633. Upon retiring, Bill became President of Local 633 Retirees Chapter for four years.
As a veteran, Bill joined A.L. Sweeney Post and took great interest in it. He was in some of the offices there for many years. His last one was commander. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Elks.
Bill is survived by his three children: Gloria Ellen Rousselle and her husband Leon, Cheryl Ann Gauthier and her husband Dan, Timothy Joseph Smith and his long-time partner Paola Farina; his three grandchildren: Adam and Derek Smith, Roxanne Gauthier; step-brother: Craig Smith; and two step-sisters: Jane St. Pierrie, Gail Brown. In addition to his parents, Bill is predeceased by his beloved wife: Shirley (Barton) Smith; and his son: Michael William Smith.
The family would like to thank everyone at Villa Crest Nursing and Retirement Home for the great care that they provided for him.
SERVICES: A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at The Puritan Backroom’s Conference Room C, 245 Hooksett Road in Manchester from 5pm – 8pm.
