William Hancock Hawes

March 27, 1945 — November 19, 2006

Willam Hancock Hawes, 61, died November 19th, 2006 at his home in Goffstown after a courageous four and half year battle with cancer. Bill was born in Philidelphia, PA, March 27th, 1945 to Norma Allen Hawes and Leslie Hawes. He resided in the Manchester area most of his adult life. He graduated from Hanover High School in 1962. He was also a member of the Army from 1963 to 1966 and served in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief. He returned from Vietnam and attended Plymouth State College, where he graduated in 1970, with a BA in History.

Bill worked for the State of New Hampshire for 34 years at the Department of Health and Human Services, from which he retired as a manager from the Manchester District Office in 2005. Bill began his career at the State in the Salem District Office as a Social Worker. He also worked for many years in the Quality Control area.

Bill had a love of his family and a passion for cars, cooking and reading.

Family includes his wife of 16 years Carole; two sons James of Hingham MA, Christopher of Reading MA; two step-sons, Robert Preston of Memphis, TN and William Preston of Dunbarton, NH; one step-daughter Christine Alphonsin of Acworth, GA; eight grandchildren; his brother John Hawes of Hanover, NH; his former wife Joan Donovan of Manchester and several nieces and nephews. Family also includes his beloved Greyhounds, Radish and Malachi as well as his cat Rowan and his Pekingese, Ming.

A memorial service was held on Friday November 24, 2006 at Hillside United Methodist Church, 81 Center Street, in Goffstown.
