William J. "Whiff" Madden Jr., 91, of Manchester died November 17th, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Manchester on December 10, 1924, he was the son of William J. and Mary Helen (Reagan) Madden Sr. He was educated in the local school system and had excelled at both soccer and baseball while attending New England College.
During WWII, he served in the US Navy and was stationed in the Pacific Theater.
Prior to retirement, he had been employed as an offset pressman with Raytheon Services for many years before his retirement in 1989.
Whiff was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis Church and a past Worthy President of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks. He was also a lifelong member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, William J. Shanahan Division I and the American Legion Henry J. Sweeney Post #2. While raising his family, he coached his children's sports teams and will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.
He was predeceased by his wife Bridget "Bea" (Joyce) Madden in 1993.
Family members include his daughter, Maureen Madden of Manchester; his sons, Michael W. Madden, Kevin P. Madden and wife Gwyn, John A. Madden and wife Carol, William J. Madden III and his wife Evelyn, and James F. Madden, all of Manchester; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, November 21, 2016 in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
