He was born in Manchester, July 22, 1924, and was the son of John and Hortense (Hughe) Mertens. He was educated in local schools. He lived in Manchester for many years and had been a resident of Tilton the past 10 years.
Mr. Mertens served in the US Army during World War II. He fought in many campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of Auschwitz.
He worked for International Paper Co. for many years. He also worked for the Manchester School Department.
Bill was a friend to many at the Veterans Home. He loved animals and was very active with their care and well being
Family members include five children, Billie Ruth Lamarine, Christina O'Connor, both of Manchester, Victoria Rousseau, of Pembroke, NH, William R. Mertens Jr., of Ridgeway, SC, and Audrey Demers, of Londonderry, NH; 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Bengtson, and Peggy Nevius, both of Maryland; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters Evelyn Lebrecque, Helen Betley Henry and brother John E. Mertens.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the nursing staff and all who gave Bill loving supportive care at the Tilton Veteran's Home
Services were private with burial in the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.

Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., Manchester, was in charge of arrangements.
