William Russell Mertens, Jr.

William Russell Mertens Jr., a long time resident of Manchester went to be with the Lord on August 17th after a long illness with his loving family by his side.

Affectionately known as Bill by his family and friends, he was born on March 1st, 1955, the son of the late William Russell Mertens Sr. and Patricia Edna (Grendel) Mertens Horner. Bill was educated in Manchester and graduated from Memorial High School, class of 1973.

After high school, he honorably served in the US Navy (Seabees) and proudly served as an electrical technician traveling to Cuba and working on the Alaska Pipeline. He was also a maintenance superintendent for various companies in NH and SC.

Bill was an avid fisherman, enjoyed movies (his favorite actress was Elizabeth Taylor) and enjoyed long walks every day. He was also an avid reader and liked listening to Country Western Music (Garth Brooks was his favorite). Bill was very generous to people in need and always helped family with home projects.

He is survived by one son, Daniel Mertens and his wife Caroline and a granddaughter in South Carolina. Four sisters, Billie Ruth Lamarine and husband Ed of Manchester, Christina O’Connor and husband Gary of Manchester, Victoria Rousseau and husband Robert of Whitefield, and Audrey Demers and husband Scott of Moultonborough.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of the Hillsborough County Nursing Home for their wonderful care complemented by the hospice staff for the true compassion given to Bill during his illness. Their support ensured that Bill’s final days were filled with comfort and peace.

There will be a private graveside service at a later date.
