He was born in Manchester on April 26, 1926 to Edward and Alice (Cronin) Smillie. He attended St. Joseph High School where he left school for two years and served in the US Navy during WWII. Upon returning he was voted class president and graduated in 1947.
He spent most of his life in sales in the plumbing and heating business and his later years working for Easter Seals.
He will be remembered most by his dear friends at "the first light of day" for his great sense of humor and endearing smile.
Bill's passions were crosswords, following the Red Sox, and politics. Bill was a past Exalted Ruler for the NH Elks Lodge #146 and was an active member for many years. One of his greatest joys was visiting with Patricia Smillie, his daughter-in-law, and granddaughter Kathleen.
In his later years he received tremendous care from the VA and Care Givers, providing him with care and compassion.
Big Bill, Bill Sr., grandpa, Bill S., and Billy where some of the nicknames he was called by the people who had the chance to know him. He will be joining his dear friend Billy L. for a cup of coffee at the big meeting, God knows he earned his seat.
Family members include his son, Stephan Smillie of Peterborough, NH, Mary Pitanis of Bedford, and William (Bill) Smillie, Jr. of Chester, NH; four grandchildren, Stephanie Smillie, Scott Smillie, Timothy Smillie, and Kathleen Smillie.
A prayer service took place on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St, corner of North St. Following the service, a Sharing and Caring gratitude remembrance dinner was held at the Puritan Backroom's Conference Center, Hooksett Rd.
